HANDmade
Saturday 3rd October - Saturday 14th November 2009
Preview evening Friday 2nd October
HANDmade promises to be an unusual, unique and interactive experience as local furniture designer:maker
Nick James
relocates his workshop into the gallery, giving visitors a chance to see him working on a live commission.
Visitors are encouraged to return to the gallery throughout the six-week exhibition, seeing firsthand the progress and techniques used for each piece. The exhibition will also be streamed live on the internet so visitors can keep up to date with Nicks progress.
There's also a programme of public events so that visitors can get HANDS ON by joining in with talks and demonstrations. Nick will be holding a public talk on Saturday 3rd October outlining what he plans to do in the gallery over the following six weeks and will be holding a special midway viewing event as part of
Design Event 09
on Saturday 17th October. The finished piece will be on display (hopefully!) during gallery opening hours on Saturday 14th November.
A new range of furniture has been specially designed and made for this exhibition and will be unveiled for the first time. In keeping with his previous pieces, the new range will focus on traditional, time-honoured techniques with a contemporary twist. Nick has also produced his first catalogue which will be launched during the exhibition.
Design Event 09
Celebrating its fifth birthday, Design Event, the North Easts annual design festival will take place from 16-25th October with the theme of politics and play.
There will be a total of 25 exhibitions, talks, tours and events over a 10 - day period across the whole of the North East celebrating design in all its forms including graphics, illustration, fashion, product and architecture. It will highlight the very best regional talent and bring in exhibitions from across the world.
